The hotelier also lauded president Leonel Fernandez’s decision to allocate 50 million pesos to purchase antiviral medicine. The works will begin in the coming weeks in Bavaro, Punta Cana, Miches, Sabana de la Mar and Juan Dolio, in the east; Puerto Plata in the north, and San Juan River and Samana in the northeast, investments he said will strengthen the Dominican destination in the world’s major markets, especially Europe.

Garcia said the investments are also to build golf courses, international tennis courts and a convention center in Santo Domingo, among others. “Tourism is emerging as a market of high quality and it’s booming. Domestic and foreign investment is at its best, even better than in the past 20 years.”

The official noted that there’s currently no Latin American or Caribbean tourist destination with better profitability that Dominican Republic’s, “where reuests to develop new investment projects arrive daily. This compels us to develop a plan of vital infrastructure.”

Tropical Wave Eastern Caribbean

The National Meteorological Office (ONAMET) issued green alert for Montecristi, María Trinidad Sánchez, La Vega, Monseñor Nouel, Duarte, Elías Piña, Dajabón, Azua, Sánchez Ramírez, San Cristóbal, Independencia, Hermanas Mirabal, Santiago, Espaillat, Monte Plata and San Juan de la Maguana.

Also under green alert are other provinces, such as San José de Ocoa, Santiago Rodríguez, Valverde Mao, Santo Domingo, Peravia and Puerto Plata due to a tropical wave in the eastern Caribbean near the Lesser Antilles that continues to get better organized.

Forecasters give the system a medium -or 20 to 50 percent chance- of developing into a tropical depression within the next hours. The computer models predict it will aim generally northwest, potentially putting the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, the Bahamas and Florida in its path.
